Antisocial Networks

July 30th, 2009

Several months ago, my friend Chris (A Mighty Pirate’s Blog) wrote up a great article on the digital relationships and the actual harm that can come from social networking sites, and I connected with it.

Great write up, Chris. I get your point, and I agree that there is a total loss of connection when we solely rely on digital relationships. That’s the part of me that just wants to drop FB and MyS altogether; the part that asks why I even have these accounts. Do I really need to stay connected with people that have no desire to maintain an “analog” one? Why should I maintain a connection that only consists of status updates and the sharing of funny pics and vids?

I mean there are pros and cons for both sites, but ultimately, for me, it boils down to this. I got involved with both of these sites as a way to connect with friends I already had or had lost communication with along the way. After the all the time that I have spent as a member, the friends that actually, truly want to be friends with me, usually contact me in some other way.

Maybe that’s harsh. I mean, there really are people out there that I would chit chat with every so often, through these sites, but it never went beyond that. So why bother anymore? You want to be my friend, then do it. Call me. Email me. Stop over and say “Hey!” You don’t need me to accept your Mafia invites and feed you with status updates, do I?

Nevertheless, I debated on the deletion of these account for months. Yesterday, I did it. Its over.

Who knows? Maybe I’ll end up changing my mind and coming back, but as it stands now, it’s a relief. Now, I can spend my energy and internet time on the creative outlets – this blog, Flickr, RedBubble and IMP. Sure, they’re just more social networking sites, but they’re more an outlet for me as opposed to a vacuum.

    I did that once too. I came back lol. I lost all my blogs that I had stored on MySpace, etc. Now I just keep that separate. I just figure that some communication (digital or otherwise) is at least that, just some communication. I keep track of e-mail addresses, phone numbers, physical addresses for when I do decide to (since I am a busier than normal person) pursue real communication with those people in the future. I figure it’s better than nothing, but I will have to 100% agree with you, it will free up your time!! LOL

    @Lucinda

    And I agree with you too, Cindy. At least it is something. As I said, there are the pros, and that is definitely one of them. I just got fed up with being tied to the damn things. And yes, it’s so much nicer. These days, I can take all the spare minutes I can scrounge together. Haha
